Canada rallies against Chile for draw

March 9, 2009

Team Canada rallied from a deficit twice to draw the host Chileans 3-3 Sunday afternoon at the Men’s Pan American Cup in Santiago. Connor Grimes, Wayne Fernandes, and Rob Short scored the Canadian goals.
Chile got off to a quick start in the match featuring the two favourites from Pool B. Esteban Krainz and Gabriel Thiermann each scored within the first four minutes of the match on Canadian goalkeeper David Carter to take an early lead.

Grimes scored his first goal of the tournament in the ninth minute to cut the lead in half. Fernandes then netted the equalizer on a penalty corner seven minutes later. It was his third goal of the tournament.

With the Chileans leading 3-2 late in the game veteran Rob Short scored on a well-executed penalty corner to earn the tie. The goal also ensured the Canadians will remain on top of the Pool B standings via goal differential heading into their final round robin game against Mexico on Tuesday.
