It’s a wrap…

Thanks to everyone from coast to coast who have provided the delicious filling for my submissions over the past few months. Athletes, coaches, and support staff have been nothing short of fantastic.

I’ve learned that Field Hockey Canada is special. I feel privileged to have been welcomed into the Canadian Field Hockey family circle albeit for a brief period of time.

In wrapping up my gig let me share with you some thoughts from two senior women national players: Katie Baker and Jessalyn Walkey…

Ali named University Games Chef de Mission

Beth Ali appointed Chef de Mission of University Games

Former assistant coach to the Canadian women’s national team, Beth Ali, has been appointed as Canada’s Chef de Mission for the 2011 Winter World University Games in Erzurum, Turkey.

Beth has been involved with field hockey for many years serving as Executive Director of Field Hockey Ontario, President of the CIS Field Hockey Coaches Association, and a Field Hockey Canada Board Member.

She is currently Associate Director of Athletics and Recreation at Ryerson University…

California Cup begins today in LA

Cal Cup begins today in Los Angeles

The California Cup, also known admiringly as The Cal Cup, begins today at Moorpark College outside Los Angeles and features several competing Canadian teams.  The Cal Cup promotes itself as North America’s best field hockey tournament and will run until May 31st.

If you happen to be in the area come out to cheer on the Canadian teams!

FHC announces Women’s Carding Camp

The Women’s Senior National Team will be holding its annual carding camp in Vancouver from November 9th to 14th, 2010.  Invitations along with camp objectives and details will be e-mailed to selected athletes in early September.  Additional Invitations will be extended to deserving players after the CIS Championship Tournament.

Identified Athletes unable to participate in the 2010 U18 Women’s Junior National Camp due to prior commitments will be provided with the opportunity to remain in the identified pool.  Your reply to the camp invitation must clearly state your prior commitments conflicting with the August camp.  This information will be collected and provided to the junior national team coach. 

Identified athletes not at the August camp may be invited to participate at future camps and competitions during the year at the discretion of the senior/junior national coach…

Connecting with the kids – young and older – who suit up for our National sides has been nothing short of exhilarating for this scribe. I often wonder how and who ignites a fire under kids to direct them to a specific sport during their formative high school years.

I contacted Guy Zink, teacher/mentor/coach at St. John’s Kilmarnock (SJK) private school (Breslau Ontario) who has rich memories of senior national team member Jessalyn Wakely…

FIH releases Commonwealth Games hockey schedule

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) have released the hockey schedule for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, with four women’s matches to kick-start the competition on 4 October.

A total of ten men’s and ten women’s teams will compete in the11-day hockey tournament, to be played on two pitches of the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in the Indian capital, the same venue as the Hero Honda FIH World Cup in March this year…
