Canada’s Men arrive in England for continued build up toward October’s Pan Am Games

A busy year lies ahead for Canada’s men as they are getting set to defend their Pan Am Gold from ’07 and their number #1 ranking in the Americas. A gold medal provides direct entry to the 2012 Olympics for the world’s number 10 ranked Canada. The task won’t be easy with world number 11 Argentina as Canada’s main opposition and traditional rival. Since 1983, Canada and Argentina have contended each of the previous 7 finals with Canada taking home 4 gold medals…

Chile takes Game 5 with 1-0 win over Canada

Chile defeated Canada 1-0 in the final match of the 5-test series in Santiago, Chile. The rain held out for the final game at the Prince of Wales Country Club and although Canada started out very strong in the first 10 minutes of the game, it was Chile who managed to capitalize early and tie up the series. Each team finshed with two wins and a tie after 5 games. The Canadians seemed to put the pressure on themselves and were unable to capitalize in the attacking 25. Down a starting forward, the team lacked Kingston, ON native, Kate Gillis, who was unable to play after showing minor concussions symptoms from being hit with at stick on a follow through in the fourth game…

Canada wins 1-0 over Chile in Game 4

Game 4 Report Thursday, April 7, 2011The Canadians were able to capitalize early in the opening two minutes of the game to go ahead 1-0. The Chileans were transferring the ball in the backfield and great pressure up front by the scoring duo, Kate Gillis and Jessalyn Walkey. Walkey was able to steal the ball at the top of the circle and found herself walking in the circle alone and with great patience carried the ball past the goalie and flicked the ball high into the mesh. Walkey, tying Gillis now, with three goals in the series has shown great composure up front and the team is certainly glad to have her back! The game was mostly held between the two 25y lines with no penalty corners being awarded to either team…

The 3rd Annual Celebration of Women in Sport was held on April 3rd, 2011 at the Pacific Institute for Sport and Excellence in Victoria, BC. The luncheon honoured a variety of women involved in sport and also featured keynote speaker Kristina Groves, a four-time Olympic medalist in long track speed skating.

 

This year, Krista Thompson was honoured as the 2011 Women in Sport Coach of the Year…

Can vs Chile (Game 3 Report)Tuesday, April 5, 2011The Women’s national team came out hard in the third game of the Chile Series, here in Santiago. Playing at a private school, the field was packed with young ones eager to watch and cheer on their home country! Canada came at Chile very quickly in the opening half of Game 1 at the Prince of Wales Country Club in Santiago, Chile. Forward and Ontario native, Kate Gillis put Canada on the board after picking up a loose rebound off one of Canada’s first short corners. The ball was struck in by captain Katie Baker and Gillis picked up the ball and put it into the net with great composure.
